Heating with a buffer tank

What is a buffer tank?

A buffer tank, also called a buffer vessel, is a type of battery storing excess energy in the form of hot water. Buffer tanks have multiple connection points, so they can take heat from different sources. That thermal energy is retained for up to days, depending on the type of buffer tank and the insulation of the tank.
Unlike a conventional water heater, a buffer tank provides hot water not only for sanitary purposes, but also for heating. The tank acts as an intermediate storage between the energy source and the central heating system. That makes buffer tanks the perfect way to improve the sustainability of our central heating systems.

Solar energy with a buffer tank

Buffer tanks can be heated with grid electricity, but also with solar energy, for example. Solar panels perform best during the day, but the peak hours for domestic hot water consumption are in the morning and evening. With a buffer tank you build up a stock of thermal energy. Energy that can be used at any time, even when the sun is not shining. This way you get a higher efficiency from your PV system, and you are always supplied with your hot water needs.

SEDS: the sustainable heating system with buffer tank

What is SEDS?

SEDS is a collective heating system that uses buffer tanks. Through smart, data-driven control of those buffer tanks, the heating system makes CO₂-neutral living possible, and all that at the lowest price on the market.

Ready for 100% renewable energy

SEDS can be connected to any possible energy source. Sources of today and the future. As a sole source, or in a hybrid setup. This makes the heating system not only more sustainable, but also completely future-proof. In combination with a PV installation, SEDS even reaches the lowest TCO on the market.

Buffer tank for storing green energy

SEDS converts self-generated energy centrally and then stores it in a buffer tank. By separating domestic hot water and heating, the water temperature in the buffer tank can be significantly reduced.
In typical collective boiler rooms, water is heated to 60-70°C all year round. Not at SEDS.
On the harshest winter days, SEDS already suffices with 40°C, in summertime even with 17 degrees. The seasonal temperature in the buffer tanks reduces energy consumption and increases energy efficiency.

Connection with heat pump

In order to get hot water from the tap, you obviously need a higher water temperature. That is why SEDS is equipped with a heat pump. This ensures that only the water that is actually used reaches a higher temperature.

That’s how SEDS makes CO₂-neutral living possible and comfortable.

SEDS: the solution to the energy crisis

Preparing for energy-neutral living

To end the energy crisis, we must move away from fossil fuels. As a contractor, architect or engineer, you are building the world of tomorrow. Therefore, you must also prepare your projects for that world of tomorrow.
Developments in the renewable energy field do not stand still. If you want your next housing project to be truly sustainable and future-proof, invest in hybrid and source-independent systems. Systems that are open to all forms of energy. Grey and green, now and in the future. This allows your building project to grow with the latest innovations and enables energy-neutral living.

Why energy-neutral living is so important

Environmental benefits

Residential buildings account for 45% of our CO₂ emissions. 35% of these come from energy.
Fossil fuels are not only exhaustible, they are also depleting our planet. To meet our rising energy demand and ensure the quality of life for future generations, the switch to energy-neutral buildings is essential.

Political Independence

For our fossil fuel supplies, we are largely dependent on oil-rich countries. Consequently, fossil energy supply is a powerful political tool. If we want to guarantee our political and economic stability, we have to convert to alternative sources of energy. And just as important: prepare our buildings for these new energy sources.

Financial benefits

Renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and geothermal energy are inherently free. However, generating them requires a certain amount of investment. Collective residential buildings are therefore the place to invest in renewable energy. Because, united in an energy community, the investment is quickly recovered.
The building increases in value, and the purchase of additional energy is brought to an absolute minimum.

Energy-neutral living, already possible with SEDS

Source-independent system

With an innovative and sustainable system, SEDS provides collective housing units with domestic hot water and seasonal comfort temperature. The system is completely source-independent. As a result, SEDS is fully prepared for the rise of renewable energy sources. As a sole source, or in a hybrid setup.

Focus on energy efficiency

In addition to renewable energy generation, energy efficiency is just as important in making energy-neutral living possible.
That’s why SEDS is equipped with a buffer tank and a heat pump controlled by smart techniques and real-time information.
Domestic hot water and heating were separated. By doing so, the water temperature could be lowered significantly and even made seasonal. Only water that is actually consumed is heated to higher temperatures.
This leads to unprecedented energy efficiency. Thus, making SEDS the most profitable square meter of your building project.

Cheapest on the market

Last but not least, CO₂-neutral living must be accessible to everyone. This means that it must also be affordable. Or better yet: cheaper than classic systems.
SEDS is already cost-effective from 15 residential units. In combination with a PV system, it even comes out as the cheapest in the test.
Moreover, the system also equals the life span of the building itself. Now that’s sustainable building. That durability and low monthly costs give SEDS the lowest TCO (total cost of ownership) on the market.
